WILLING ... to die for a... LIVING

Hope has been personified in the face of a disaster. Nature wasn't too kind but the man, unmoved by the pain and distress, still smiles. The smile could be because he has seen worse in life before, it could be because he has managed to save a valued possession, it could even be because he's still alive or it is simply a sarcastic reply to nature. Carrying a sewing machine, which has been rusted to the extend it might never be useful again, the man looks confident of beating all odds and coming back on land. Being immersed in water till his chin has not made a penny of a difference to his optimism.

We also go through such difficulties, though seldom as big as the one shown in the picture. But most of us get slaved by the situation, we forget our strengths and start focussing on our weaknesses. We keep getting weaker and eventually give in. In short it is HOPE ... that we lose.

We have to learn a lot from this, apparently, weak-old man. We have to learn how to fight back, how to remain confident and to understand that our destiny is in our hands. We have to learn how to keep hope 'cos If he can do it ... so can we.

All the so-called "secrets of success" will not work unless you do. God gives every bird its food, but does not throw it into its nest. The thing which matters most is the effort and hard work. Moreever, if you give 100 percent all of the time, somehow things will work out in the end.

Hard work spotlights the character of people: some turn up their sleeves, some turn up their noses, and some don't turn up at all. The picture spotlights the character of the old man: Hard work and Determination. Despite all the odds, he is carrying the sewing machine (most probably, his bread and butter). Some people dream of success... while others wake up and work hard at it. The old man is working hard towards a better future and is saving himself much pain (pain refers to a weak future), by taking pains; much trouble, by taking trouble. The old man is on the right track, but is not sitting there but running for a cause. There are no easy methods of learning difficult things; the method is to close your door, give out that you are not at home, and work. The old man is not making an excuse of a difficulty (High water level due to a possible natural calamity), but rather giving his full effort. Many people want things, but they don't really have the strength and courage. You get what you want if you want it badly enough. The old man has a lot of strength and courage as is evident from carrying his “life feeder” (sewing machine) in unimaginable circumstances.

The man is smiling despite all the difficulties and challenges. This speaks volume about the optimism and faith of the man. The man through his “never say die” attitude and optimism should be able to devise a new journey for himself which has been hampered by the natural calamity.

The picture has a lot of learning for us. We should be optimistic and always try to make things happen rather than waiting for things to happen. We should always make efforts to be successful as success is a ladder you cannot climb with your hands in your pockets. We should always keep on smiling, no matter what the outcome is and what destiny has in for us. We should give more while remaking an effort as it is rightly said by George Bernard Shaw “When I was young, I observed that nine out of ten things I did were failures. So I did ten times more work.”

GODISNOWHERE

Speak out the above (in your heart or aloud)

You will probably say GOD is NOW here or GOD is NO where
What ever u read out is your own perception of life. You might be down with your worries and be thinking yourself as the unfortunate asking God “Why me?” Or you may be the one although in bad phase of life but still thankful for the things that make you fortunate (you have bed to sleep, food to eat (albeit of mess!!), a house to get back to this Diwali, family to take care of you etc)

This man in the picture might just read out the above (in case he can) God is Now Here for he is able to make way for himself although in chin deep waters and able to rescue possessions that might help him restart his life from where he left it with a hope to lead the rest with dignity.

The picture speaks to me abut the SWOT of LIFE. Life……full of weak points because of the threats thrown in by the nature, time, our own deeds, fellow human beings an all sorts of other things which may or may not be in our control; how you perceive the opportunities in the adverse circumstances and flow through them is what is the strength.

The man who probably would have lost everything is keeping his head up straight and smiling with the hope to sew back the different corners of life torn away by the circumstances. He epitomizes the strength, the optimism and a champion who fights his old age and the challenges with a hope to sail through as a winner.

The price salvaged is although old and full of rust, but in working conditions is worth much more than it is to you and me for it lets the old man see this as something which can help him re-establish himself.
The dark shadows at the back indicate that worst may not be over yet but the optimism lets him walk in the sunshine away from the dark shadows and fight a little more to reach the island.

Also the picture lets me realize how important it is to be on your own feet and how important it is to be independent. Waiting for someone to help you sail through might just land you up at the bottom of the sea for it is human nature to first protect or think about ourselves and then about others when faced with threats to life and its integrity. It’s alright to expect others to come to your rescue but at the same time one should be mentally independent enough to fight it out alone just in case nobody turns up.

The reflection in the water speaks to me about the innermost goals and aspirations that one sets for oneself which help you forget the negative flow of energy around you and bring in the positive energy ripples around enabling you to walk a step closer to your ultimate goal. But the goal and aspirations (reflections) shall only help you sail through unless you dare to walk with hope (sunshine).

In the end I would like to end by saying that the picture speaks to me that “it’s the ATTITUDE that matters and it is the only thing that differentiates a winner and looser.” You may be a looser but your attitude can make you a winner!

You are at it again! How many times are you going to try and break me before you finally give up? You have tried anything and everything, and I can only smile at your relentlessness! But even you must realise by now, that these lines on my forehead signify more than the number of summers I have seen. They are the lasting evidence of the numerous victories I’ve scored over you Life, and this time will be no different! This time you really have torn asunder everything I own, but these waters can’t hold me forever! I will be back, and I will stitch back together a future so glorious, that even you, heartless Life, will have to outdo your own cruelty to destroy it!

You know, if one ever wanted to write a story of a friend-turned-foe, they should write about you. When I was young, carefree and innocent, you were almost a third parent to me. You were more, a friend, a philosopher and a guide. You taught me so much, but I learnt one thing on my own. And that was that as I grow up, you will not give me lessons anymore, but you will start putting obstacles in my path. For your own reasons that I never fathomed – maybe you thought I had outgrown your education, or maybe you thought it was time I learnt on my own, or maybe it was a test that still isn’t over – you suddenly started showing your true colours. I was flabbergasted, I was hurt, I was lost, but not for long!

With time, your attacks became more frequent and vicious. I did lose a few battles along the way, but even you will grudgingly concede that you can’t win the war until I surrender! And you never taught me to surrender! What you did teach me was that Hope is a good thing, that hope gives strength and that Davids of this world will always beat the Goliaths until they believe they can! Its all in the mind, Life, it is all about nerve and the desperation in your last few attacks tells me that you are losing yours! I think its time you learnt a thing or two from your own protégé!

Yes Life, I will be back, and I will stitch back together a future so glorious, that even you will have to outdo your own cruelty to destroy it!

"Journey against tide! You are not alone"...

Today is a special day for Abdullah. He has just won the world cup of life and is beaming with joy. He is coming out with flying colors. He has managed to survive the worst ever attack on his life, nature’s merciless attack, an attack which has swamped anything and everything you can imagine.

So what is it that is making him so proud? Why is he smiling?

The answer lies in the trophy that he is holding; mind it holding above his shoulder, holding steadily and firmly. It is symbolizing his victory. Today, he has lost everything except his only source of livelihood, his only companion which has earned him bread & butter for years together, his and only his ‘sewing machine’.

As a tailor by profession, he has been very attached to it. Together they have faced ups and downs of life, celebrated small moments and relished temporal gains.

Now Abdullah is going to begin a new life at a new place with his old friend.

I wonder, what happens when one loses one’s only mode of survival? Like, when a farmer loses his farms, when a milkman loses his cows, when a shop keeper loses his shop and when a taxi driver loses his taxi. Can any form of financial or emotional support substitute such a loss? -A loss which makes the person handicap, a loss which deprives him of his right to earn.

I wish this country could insure every under privilege’s lone source of income. When will we realize that it is not ‘life insurance’, ‘medical insurance ‘or ‘what not insurance ‘ that we want , the need of the hour is simple ‘living source insurance ‘ which can indemnify one’s most precious asset, an asset that generates funds for him.

Clearly, Abdullah will cross the turbulent waters to emerge as a clear winner, assured that the pearl of his life is safe, that even neck deep water has failed to snatch it from him.

Let us pledge to bring smile on every face that meets Abdullah’s fate. Let us immunize them against worst to worst disasters by providing a protective shield to their ‘source of livelihood’.

The sewing machine and the old man reflects the ageing population in many parts of the country who had a business or a way to sustain their livelihood earlier but have not been able to keep pace with the deluge of changes that are taking place in our society. The changes that are causing radical structural upheavals in the society leave no place for the deprived sections of the society. The deluge is about to devour and has already devoured many a things and is inching towards the head which symbolizes that the end is imminent unless a right efforts are made which helps them wade through the current situation towards a better future.

The picture also reflects the calamities (natural or otherwise) which disrupts the normal lifestyle and which make the sustenance very difficult. Ultimately with no option for survival and in the last ditch effort to save the life people are left with no option but to carry whatever they can towards a new place hoping that they live for tomorrow. The picture sensitizes us towards the effects of calamities that play havoc with the life of the people. It makes us think that in the pursuits of our well being we must not forget that there is a need for social security systems which must ensure sustained means of livelihood for the aged and help for the people in distress. Integrated plans of social security coupled with efforts towards sustainable plans for livelihood might change the plight of the section of society that has been reflected in the picture. The need of the hour is to provide the support board to the drowning and then put in the comprehensive plans for a continuous march towards success.

In fact another dimension may involve the investment in massive projects which prevents the occurrence of the disasters in first place. An example of the same can be comprehensive disaster management systems. The projects for rehabilitation post emergencies may involve the various initiatives to provide sustainable means of livelihood like “Rozgar yojanas”, micro credits etc which may provide the training, finances and new ways for self employment in the changing social scenario.

The picture is really heart rending if we compare ourselves with the developed world where we have many integrated plans to help the deprived and needy sections of the society. In fact India is grappling with these problems even after sixty years of independence because of desensitization of bureaucrats and the well off sections of the society. The only thing required is the channel which sensitizes the government with well structured plans to combat the situation, the channel (Pun intended) that helps the poor swim through these adversities. Associations such as MADF can help in making the efforts towards a more sanguine tomorrow, a tomorrow wherein the efforts of the poor coupled with the helping hand from the society promises a brighter future.

“Smooth seas do not make skilful sailors.”
People used to hate adversity and hurdles in life but they are the fact of life. Obstacles, barriers, challenge, setbacks, bad lucks, calamities, disaster, misery, catastrophes, distress, hardship, ill-fortune, misfortune, woe, sorrow and troubles that we faces in our lives. They occur in life and we do not have any control over them. It can occur in the form of flood as shown in the picture or in the form of financial loss. Diversity is around us all the time, but it is the way we respond to it that determines if we are to succeed or fail in life. It is our reaction to adversity that affects our life. It includes emotional and physical health.
People who are optimistic in their life and who react to adversity in positive manner live a happier and healthier life. Person who is carrying a sewing machine and giving a smile on his face shows the same attitude. People who are able to effectively respond to an adversity and overcome it will make the person to live longer life. Smile is an important point of optimistic character and it can help us to fight the challenges and overcome the adversity. When you smile and be optimistic then you feel that you full control on the adversity and after that only you can make a constructive approach to how address the challenges that you encounter each day. You will feel more energetic . You also gain the feeling of empowerment.
Finally it is the adversity which shows the true character of person. When things are fine it is quite easy for each person to go through life.
